New Streaming Service AMC+ Launches in New Zealand

What is AMC+?

AMC+ is a streaming platform from US network AMC. That’s the same network that brought us the mega-hits Breaking Bad, Better Call Saul, The Walking Dead and Mad Men.

Launched in the US back in June 2020, the service bundles content from the company’s television networks and streaming brands along with its own exclusive content.

What is there to watch?

AMC already has two streaming platforms in New Zealand:

• Acorn, which largely deals with classic murder-mystery British television
• Shudder, a popular horror-streaming platform

AMC+ takes both of these services and bundles them into its all-inclusive AMC+ service. That means you get all the best content from Acorn, Shudder, as well as shows from AMC networks, original content and other films and series.

Notable content includes:

• Tales of the Walking Dead
• Interview with a Vampire
• Mad Men
• That Dirty Black Bag
• Moonhaven
• Firebite
• Dark Winds (a critically acclaimed series from Game of Thrones creator George RR Martin)
• Midsomer Murders
• The Brokenwood Mysterious
• The Boulet Brothers’ Dragula
• Slasher: Flesh and Blood

Interestingly, there are a few high-profile absences. Two of AMC’s own most successful series ever, the aforementioned Breaking Bad and Better Call Saul are both absent. As Sky negotiated their local rights through an international distributor, both shows for now, at least, remain on Sky’s Neon.

Furthermore, while you can find content from the The Walking Dead universe on AMC+, the latest season of the original series remains with TVNZ.

How much does it cost?

The standard price for AMC+ is $9.99/month. Considering Both Acorn and Shudder currently cost $7.99/month, that makes for a good deal. Of course, that’s assuming you are interested in the content on offer with AMC+.

However, there is a free seven-day trial available if you want to try before you buy.

How does AMC+ compare to other streaming services?

Based on price alone, AMC+ is certainly a good deal. While not the cheapest streaming service on the market (Prime Video is just $8/month) it is at the cheaper end of the market. For example, a Netflix subscription costs $12.99-$24.99/month.

However, at the end of the day, true value comes from what content you want to see. If you find yourself turning to AMC+ every time you want to relax, then it may be a great deal. On the other end, if it’s only used for a scary movie night every few months, it might not be worth the outlay.
