For the second year in a row, Wet & Forget is the standout outdoor surface cleaner brand in our award ratings, as judged by Kiwi consumers. It’s the only outdoor surface cleaner to earn 5 Stars for Overall Satisfaction, a score it also achieves for the all-important category of Effectiveness, as well as for Ease of Use and Packaging. Wet and Forget takes home a great 4-star rating for Value for Money.
Wet & Forget is an iconic brand that was founded here in New Zealand. Its range of cleaning products encompasses the whole home, from laundry to garden.
Wet & Forget currently retails four outdoor surface cleaners:
The original Wet & Forget concentrate features a unique combination of biodegradable fungicides that target moss, mould, lichen, algae, and general biological growth. When diluted with water and applied to a dry surface, it immediately attacks the growth. The weathering process then continues to remove the decomposing growth over time.
Wet & Forget’s Rapid Application product is a sister product to its original blue Wet and Forget Moss, Mould, Lichen & Algae Remover. While both products have the same active ingredients, Rapid Application Moss Mould Lichen & Algae Remover comes in a handy applicator spray bottle.
Double Bubble House Wash easily dissolves dirt and grime on your paintwork, rather than moss, mould and lichen.
Hit The Deck – Deck Cleaner is for cleaning dirty or blackened decks and other timber surfaces.
30 Seconds earns a great set of ratings from its customers across all categories, including a 4-Star rating for Overall Satisfaction. Given the brand’s budget-friendly pricing, it’s no surprise that one of its top scores is for Value for Money. Its other 5-star rating is for Ease of Use.
30 Seconds’ home-cleaning products have been used in and around Kiwi homes for over 25 years. 30 Seconds has six outdoor surface cleaning products, which are available in a range of concentrate, ready-to-use, hose-applicator and hand- and motorised-spray packs.
The name says it all. All you do is apply, leave and allow the product to work over time to remove built-up lichen, moss, mould and algae on paths, roofs, brickwork and other hard surfaces.
30 Seconds’ Outdoor Cleaner is suitable for use on all hard, exterior, washable surfaces – simply spray, scrub and rinse.
Clean your roof and awnings without scrubbing or water-blasting. The cleaner works over time to remove lichen, moss, mould and algae.
Remove mould, dirt and grime from your deck or drive, also works on other outdoor wooden structures and furniture.
For mild cleaning and restoring exterior home surfaces. Can help prolong the life of your home’s exterior paintwork.
A milder home-cleaning product, suitable for removing light dirt and grime from exterior surfaces.
Rounding out our awards table, Simple Green achieves 3-Star ratings across all categories, except Ease of Use, for which it earns a 5-Star rating. While 3 Stars is not a top rating, it is by no means a measure of dissatisfaction. Rather it indicates that Simple Green’s customers are happy with the levels of effectiveness and quality delivered by the brand’s products.
Simple Green produces high-quality cleaning products with a focus on eco-friendliness. It has two outdoor cleaners in its range:
Removes mould, dirt and grime from decks and driveways, also works on other outdoor wooden structures and furniture.
Suitable for all washable exterior surfaces, removes dirt, lichen, mould and mosses.
Whether you’re cleaning the entire exterior of your home, your driveway, or just one particularly slimy part of your deck, when it comes to your choice of cleaning product, one factor is paramount: its effectiveness.
In our survey, most respondents (39%) say the most important factor when rating their choice of outdoor cleaning product is how well it lives up to its cleaning promises.
Value for Money is also another important consideration, along with Ease of Use – each cited by just under a third of respondents (29%).
Packaging ranks at the bottom of the list of influencing factors (3%), which is a little surprising, as a lot of outdoor cleaners rely on their packaging (i.e. spray bottles) for optimum results and economy of use.
Here’s the full rundown of what the consumers in our survey say are the main things they consider when rating their outdoor surface cleaner choices:

Canstar Blue surveyed 2503 New Zealand consumers across a range of categories to measure and track customer satisfaction, via ISO 26362 accredited research panels managed by Qualtrics. The outcomes reported are the results from respondents who had purchased and used an outdoor cleaner in the past 12 months. In this case, 459 New Zealanders.
Brands must have received at least 30 responses to be included. Results are comparative and it should be noted that brands receiving three stars have still achieved a satisfaction measure of at least six out of 10. Not all brands available in the market have been compared in this survey. The ratings table is first sorted by star ratings and then by mean overall satisfaction. A rated brand may receive a ‘N/A’ (Not Applicable) rating if it does not receive the minimum number of responses for that criterion.
