Most Satisfied Customers | Shotz

Shotz is rated the No.1 laundry powder for satisfaction by Kiwi consumers.

How we rate laundry powders

Our review compares laundry powders on customer satisfaction, so you can discover what other Kiwis think about our compared laundry brands before you go ahead and make a purchase. Think of it like asking hundreds of your closest friends, family members and colleagues which laundry powder brands they think are best!

Canstar Blue surveyed 1190 Kiwis who had purchased and used a laundry powder in the past three months and asked for their feedback on the brand they bought.

  • The outcomes reported in these ratings are measured via accredited research panels managed by Qualtrics.

Respondents rate their satisfaction with their laundry powder brands from zero to ten, where zero is extremely dissatisfied and ten is extremely satisfied. Brand satisfaction was rated by respondents on the following criteria:

  • Overall Satisfaction: measures consumer satisfaction with a laundry powder brand as an individual score NOT a combined total of all criteria.
  • Ease of Use: the laundry powder is easy to dispense and straightforward to use.
  • Effectiveness: the product effectively cleans clothes.
  • Packaging: the packaging is informative and aids the powder’s use.
  • Scent: the powder has a pleasant fragrance that leaves clothes smelling fresh.
  • Value for Money: the powder is economical to use and its results deliver good value.

The winning brand is the one that receives the highest Overall Satisfaction rating once all the scores from the Overall Satisfaction criteria are combined and averaged.

  • Overall Satisfaction is asked as a specific question and represents an individual measure, not a combined total of all criteria.
  • When we cannot determine a clear winner from the criteria for the Overall Satisfaction rating, we will then look at the other criteria measured in the rating.
    • The brand with the highest number of five-star ratings within the supporting criteria will become the five-star recipient in overall satisfaction, and thus win the award. If a clear leader still cannot be determined from the supporting criteria, joint winners will be declared.

Brands must have received at least 30 responses to be included, so not all brands available in the market have been compared in this survey. The brands rated in this survey are listed below in order of best overall satisfaction.

  • Shotz
  • Earthwise
  • Persil
  • Fab

Ecostore

Ratings Results

Like the majority of brands in this year’s award ratings, Ecostore earns a great 4-Star rating for Overall Satisfaction. It’s a rating it achieves across all our award categories, except for Effectiveness, for which it gets a 3-Star rating.

Editor’s Notes

Ecostore is a homegrown success story. Founded in Aotearoa in 1993, it retails a wide range of home and personal cleaning products that are ecofriendly and cruelty free. Available in 1kg ($8 approx), 2kg ($15 approx) and 4.5kg ($33.50 approx) packs, there are four Ecostore laundry powders to choose from:

All safe for greywater and septic tanks and feature no optical brighteners, phosphates or synthetic fragrances.

Surf

Ratings Results

Rounding out this year’s laundry powder awards rankings, Surf earns predominantly 3-Star ratings. However, while this is not a top rating, it is by no means a measure of dissatisfaction. Rather it shows Surf customers are happy with the performance of the laundry brand. Surf achieves its highest rating for Value for Money: 4 Stars.

Editor’s Notes

Surf is an international brand that is available in supermarkets across the country. Available in 1kg ($6.50 approx) and 3kg ($17 approx) packs, there are five Surf laundry powders to choose from: Coastal Luxury, Herbal Extracts, Sensitive, Sunshine Citrus, Tropical.

Other laundry powders

Not all laundry powder brands in the market qualify for our ratings (based on minimum survey sample size), but that doesn’t mean they’re not worth considering. Here are two other brands to check out before making your final decision.

Clean

Editor’s Notes

Clean is the own-brand laundry powder available at Woolworths supermarkets. There are two powders to choose from:

  • Tropical Bloom (2kg – $7.50)
  • Lemon Fresh (4kg – $9.70)

Pam’s

Editor’s Notes

Pam’s is the own brand available in Foodstuff supermarkets, including New World, Pak’nSave and 4 Square. Pam’s laundry powder costs $4 for 1kg and is available in Sensitive, Summer and Tropical.

Choosing the Right Laundry Powder for You

Over a third (35%) of those in our survey said that fragrance played a big part in their choice of laundry powder. However, overall, a powder’s scent plays little part in our consumers’ overall satisfaction levels with their brands. Indeed, just over a quarter of those in our survey (27%) buy sensitive powders, that shun harsh perfumes. How a powder removes grease, grime and dirt is by far the biggest driver of consumer satisfaction, followed by Value for Money.

Here’s the full rundown of what the consumers in our survey rate as the most important factors when it comes to their Overall Satisfaction with their laundry powders:

  • Effectiveness: 33%
  • Value for Money: 22%
  • Ease of Use: 18%
  • Packaging: 15%
  • Scent: 12%
