How we rate fans

Our review compares fans on customer satisfaction, so you can discover what Kiwis think about our compared fan brands before you go ahead and make a purchase. Think of it like asking hundreds of your closest friends and family which fan brand they think is best!

Canstar Blue surveyed 593 Kiwis who had bought fans to use at home in the last three years and asked for their feedback on the fan they bought.

  • The outcomes reported in these ratings are measured via accredited research panels managed by Qualtrics.

Respondents rate their satisfaction with their fan brands from zero to ten, where zero is extremely dissatisfied and ten is extremely satisfied. Brand satisfaction was rated by respondents on the following criteria:

  • Overall Satisfaction: measures consumer satisfaction with a fan brand as an individual score NOT a combined total of all criteria.
  • Value for Money: the cost is low for the quality and performance of the fan.
  • Performance: the fan cools effectively, hasn’t broken (i.e. is without faults) and its performance hasn’t reduced over time.
  • Ease of Use: settings and functions are easy to locate and use.
  • Design: the fan size suits its purpose and the appearance/finish of the appliance is aesthetically pleasing.
  • Functions & Features: the fan has adequate cooling functions and extra features, such as a timer, remote, etc.

The winning brand is the one that receives the highest Overall Satisfaction rating once all the scores from the Overall Satisfaction criteria are combined and averaged.

  • Overall Satisfaction is asked as a specific question and represents an individual measure, not a combined total of all criteria.
  • When we cannot determine a clear winner from the criteria for the Overall Satisfaction rating, we will then look at the other criteria measured in the rating.
    • The brand with the highest number of five-star ratings within the supporting criteria will become the five-star recipient in overall satisfaction, and thus win the award. If a clear leader still cannot be determined from the supporting criteria, joint winners will be declared.

Brands must have received at least 30 responses to be included, so not all brands available in the market have been compared in this survey. The brands rated in this survey are listed below in order of best overall satisfaction.

  • De’Longhi
  • Dyson
  • Living & Co

Dyson

Ratings Results

This is the first time that De’Longhi has appeared in our Fans Award ratings, and the Italian brand certainly blows away the competition. It’s the only fan brand to earn a top 5-Star rating for Overall Satisfaction. And it earns further 5-Star ratings for Performance, Functions & Features and Ease of Use, plus a great 4-Star rating for Design.

It achieves its lowest rating, 3 Stars, for Value for Money, which is a reflection of the brand’s higher price points, compared to other more budget-friendly fan brands: its range costs between $200-$260.

However, it’s worth noting that 3 Stars is by no means a measure of dissatisfaction. Rather it shows that De’Longhi’s customers are happy with the Value for Money delivered by their fan choices.

Editor’s Notes

De’Longhi is known for its well-designed, quality home appliances. Its range of fans encompasses three quiet pedestal fans and three tower fans.

All models feature remote controls, while De’Longhi’s Oscillating Tower Fan comes with an ioniser feature, for cleaner air.

Dyson

Dyson

Ratings Results

Our award winner in 2022, this year Dyson sits in second place on our awards table, earning a 4-Star Overall Satisfaction rating.

Dyson achieves its best rating for Design, which is one of Dyson’s strong features across all its consumer products. Like our winner, De’Longhi, the brand earns its lowest rating, 3 Stars, for Value for Money, which again is a reflection of Dyson’s more expensive appliances.

Editor’s Notes

Dyson fans are renowned for their unique, bladeless designs, which produce smoother currents of cooling air. The brand’s range comprises 10 models, seven of which also offer heating functionality.

Its cooling fans start from around $400 for a basic tower fan, while its most expensive model, the Dyson Purifier Cool, removes ultrafine particles from the air and costs over $1000.

Living & Co

Ratings Results

Last year’s award winner Living & Co slips down this year’s award table to third. In addition to its great 4-Star Overall Satisfaction rating, the popular Kiwi brand earns two great 5-Star ratings, for Ease of Use and Value for Money. Across all other ratings categories, Living & Co’s customers award it 3 Stars.

Editor’s Notes

Distributed by The Warehouse, Living & Co offers a range of affordable appliances and homewares, including 13 fans, that cover the following categories:

Desk fans: As the name suggests, desk fans are small fans that are often powered by USB, meaning they can be plugged into your laptop. Living & Co offers an affordable range of desk fans, starting from just $6.

Floor fans: Offer stronger cooling across a wider area. Prices from around $30.

Pedestal fans: Feature adjustable stands, prices from $19-$49. Living & Co’s most expensive model comes with a remote control.

Tower fans: Living & Co’s tower fans boast features including: bladeless technology, timers, remote controls and temperature displays. Prices range from $59-$129.

Goldair

Ratings Results

Despite sitting fourth on our awards table due to its Overall Satisfaction rating score, Goldair still achieves an admirable set of ratings across all categories measured in our awards ratings: 4 Stars for every measure of consumer satisfaction apart from Ease of Use, for which Goldair earns a top 5-Star rating.

Editor’s Notes

Goldair offers an impressive range of fans, including desk, ceiling and wall fans, plus pedestal and bladeless tower fans, many of which feature wi-fi and remote controls.

Goldair’s prices start at $100 for its compact desk fan, and go up to around $500 for heat-cool tower fan models.

Canstar Blue surveyed 2575 New Zealand consumers across a range of categories to measure and track customer satisfaction, via ISO 26362 accredited research panels managed by Qualtrics. The outcomes reported are the results from respondents who had purchased and used an air fryer in the past three months. In this case, 560 New Zealanders.

Brands must have received at least 30 responses to be included. Results are comparative and it should be noted that brands receiving three stars have still achieved a satisfaction measure of at least six out of 10. Not all brands available in the market have been compared in this survey. The ratings table is first sorted by star ratings and then by mean overall satisfaction. A rated brand may receive a ‘N/A’ (Not Applicable) rating if it does not receive the minimum number of responses for that criterion.
