These days, a refrigerator is no longer just a refrigerator. It’s amazing what a fridge can do! Features don’t stop at built-in water and ice dispensers, auto defrosting and climate monitoring settings, there are models with televisions and touchscreen displays. Some even utilise apps and WiFi to help you manage your grocery list.
We all use a refrigerator in our households, but what makes one brand stand out from the next, according to Kiwis? Is it the bells and whistles, design or functionality? To find out, Canstar Blue canvassed the opinions of New Zealanders across a range of categories, to measure and track their satisfaction. To decide which refrigerator brand offers the best level of customer satisfaction, each was rated across the following categories:
- Overall Satisfaction
- Value for Money
- Internal Layout
- Reliability
- Quality of Fittings and Fixtures
- Food Features
- Freshness
- Style/External Design
Winning top spot and taking home Canstar Blue’s award for Most Satisfied Customers | Refrigerators is Samsung. Samsung was awarded 5 Stars for Overall Satisfaction, Internal Layout, Quality of Fittings and Fixtures, Food Features and Style/External Design. It was awarded 4 Stars in all other categories.
Fisher and Paykel also scored highly across the board, pulling in 5 Star ratings for Internal Layout, Quality of Fittings and Fixtures and Reliability, and scoring a respectable 4 Stars in its remaining categories. And Mitisbushi was up there too, with 5 Star ratings in five out of eight categories.
What makes a good refrigerator?
According to Canstar Blue’s survey respondents, Value for Money and Internal Layout are the key drivers of satisfaction (both sitting at 24%). This is understandable, as refrigerators don’t come cheap, and the ease of accessibility to reach and place food is key. Close behind, Reliability is another key driver of satisfaction, at 19%, and Quality of Fittings and Fixtures not far behind at 17%.
New Zealanders need more food space
We’re stocking our fridges and freezers chock-a-block, it appears. Of those surveyed, 30% say they want a larger freezer, as theirs is always too full; 20% feel the same about their fridge. Maybe our tendency to over-fill our freezers accounts for the next stat we uncovered: 13% admit to often forgetting about food they have in their freezer, then having to throw it out!
How often do Kiwis clean their refrigerators?
Canstar Blue’s survey found 31% of people clean their fridge monthly, 20% fortnightly and just 9% once a week. 19% said every few months. How often should we be cleaning our fridges? Every month is ideal, according to experts. Scientists say salad drawers contain 750 times the safe level of bacteria, making them one of the main places to require a regular clean.
