Why do I need to clean my washing machine?
Washing machines need cleaning for several reasons:
- Remove residue build-up: Over time, detergent, fabric softener, and laundry debris can accumulate inside the washing machine. This residue can cling to the drum, door seal, dispensers, and other parts of the machine, leading to unpleasant odors and reduced cleaning efficiency.
- Prevent mould and mildew growth: The combination of moisture and warmth inside the washing machine creates an environment conducive to mold and mildew growth.
- Odour prevention: Odours can develop inside the washing machine due to the growth of bacteria, mold, and mildew.
- Maintaining performance: A clean washing machine operates more efficiently. Removing build-up and residue ensures that the machine can effectively agitate, rinse, and spin the laundry, resulting in cleaner and fresher clothes.

Cleaning your washing machine is essential to maintain its performance and prevent unpleasant odors. Here’s a step-by-step guide on how to clean a washing machine:
What you’ll need
- White vinegar
- Baking soda
- Microfibre cloth or sponge
- Old toothbrush
- Distilled water
- Clean, dry cloth
Instructions
1. Empty the drum
Make sure the washing machine is empty. Remove any clothes, detergent, or other items from the drum.
2. Clean the dispensers
Remove detergent, fabric softener, and bleach dispensers, if applicable. Wash them in warm, soapy water, using an old toothbrush to scrub away any residue. Rinse thoroughly and let them air dry.
3. Run a hot water cycle
Set your washing machine to the hottest water temperature and the longest cycle. If your machine has a cleaning cycle, use that. Otherwise, choose a regular cycle.
4. Add vinegar
Pour two cups of white vinegar into the detergent dispenser or directly into the drum. Vinegar helps break down mineral deposits and detergent build-up.
5. Pause the cycle
Once the machine is filled with water, pause the cycle and let it sit for about an hour. This allows the vinegar to work on any mold, mildew, or mineral deposits.

6. Resume and complete the cycle
After the pause, allow the washing machine to complete the cycle. The hot water and vinegar will help clean the internal components.
7. Wipe down the interior
Once the cycle is complete, use a microfibre cloth or sponge to wipe down the interior of the washing machine, including the door, rubber gasket, and drum. Pay special attention to any areas with visible residue or mold.
8. Clean the rubber seal
If your washing machine has a rubber seal around the door, lift it and clean both sides with a mixture of equal parts water and vinegar. Use an old toothbrush to scrub away any mold or residue.
9. Run a second cycle with baking soda
To eliminate any remaining odors, run a second cycle with one cup of baking soda. This helps neutralise odours and acts as a mild abrasive to clean the drum.
10. Wipe down exterior surfaces
Clean the exterior surfaces of the washing machine, including the control panel, with a damp cloth. Dry with a clean, dry cloth.
11. Leave the door or lid open
After cleaning, leave the washing machine door/lid ajar to allow air circulation and prevent mold growth.
By regularly following these steps, you can keep your washing machine clean and running efficiently. Performing this cleaning routine every month or as needed will help maintain a fresh and odour-free appliance.
